Everything you need to know about Rubber Mulch

Rubber Mulch is one of our newest products. Coming in 6 colours, rubber mulch is the perfect plastic alternative to wooden mulch. In this blog we will be looking at what makes the rubber mulch so popular, how to correctly install the mulch, how customers have used it previously, as well as frequently asked questions.

Rubber Mulch and its advantages

Every bag of mulch is manufactured from recycled tyres before being covered in a durable coating to create a bark like appearance. Rubber mulch comes in a choice of 6 colours, beige, blue, brown, cedar grey, green and redwood making it perfect for any job. As well as the environmentally friendliness, rubber mulch has several advantages over its wooden counterpart.

Because rubber mulch does not absorb water, making it very hard for weeds and pests to grow. This means that mulch requires very little maintenance, and you wont have to worry about insects inhabiting the mulch.

The plastic materials used to manufacture rubber mulch does not decompose, this means that, once installed, mulch can be in place for up to 20 years, and after use, the mulch pieces can be recycled again to create a new product and protect the environment.

When the rubber mulch is laid with the resin binder its forms a compact solid body of rubber mulch. This makes the rubber mulch weather and wind resistant, meaning the mulch will stay in place even in the windiest conditions. This means that the you don’t have to worry about the mulch moving out of place, or losing maintaining a consistent covering.

What can Rubber mulch be used for?

Playground Flooring

The most common use that we’ve seen for Rubber mulch is to provide a safe play surface for play areas. The rubber mulch provides a critical fall height of up to 3 meters high, making it extremely safe in play areas where children are climbing on playground equipment. The variety of colours can also give the playground a touch of colour. Because the rubber mulch is bonded together by resin none of the rubber mulch will spread, unlike wooden mulch where its easy for it to be kicked around and brought up, which could lead to wooden shrapnel hitting children possibly leading to injuries, which would not happen with bonded rubber mulch.

Flower Bed Flooring

Alongside the practical applications, rubber mulch also works perfectly  when looking to provide a visually appealing base to a flower bed. The colour variety allows the mulch to compliment any plants that may be planted. Because rubber mulch doesn’t absorb water, more water is able to go to the soil beneath the mulch allowing the soil to better fertilize and could aid the growth of flowers and plants. Not absorbing water also prevents weeds and pests from growing in the flower beds, helping to maintain a clean flower bed with no unwanted weeds growing.

Pathways

Rubber mulch is perfect for providing pathways without ruining the natural aesthetics of the surroundings. Rubber mulch gives a natural looking path without the issues that come with wooden mulch. Normally when wooden mulch is used on pathways there is an issue with the pieces being kicked and moved around, possibly leaving empty patches and a mess of the surrounding area. however, with rubber mulch this is not the case because of the binder, there is very little chance any of the mulch will be moved or dislodged. Because of this, the rubber mulch is ideal for pathways. Rubber mulch would also provide more grip and stability on running and cycling routes and pathways, which could help prevent falls and injuries.

Installing Rubber Mulch

Rubber mulch is quickly installed and produces minimal disruption to existing ground and site as it can be installed on almost any level surface. With the current ground being excavated and levelled to a certain depth dependent on the customers critical height requirements, and the use of woven membrane to further prevent weed growth. The little ground preperation is thanks to the mulches drainage properties, however in slow drainage areas some ground work may be required to help prevent water build up. Perimeter edges are not always required either, if installing onto soil or grass you can dig down to a specific depth and fill to meet the current height of the surrounding surface to ensure that there are no edges which can be trippped over or prevent wheelchair access. Once installed, the area should set after 24 hours, but should not be used for at least 72 hours.

Rubber Mulch Maintenance

Rubber mulch needs to be maintained to ensure normal wear and tear and UV exposure does not lead to base rubber being exposed and as a result leave  black marks on users. to prevent this as best as possible follow these precautions:

1) Only allow appropriate footwear to be used on the surface (high heels and studs can damage the surface).

2) Sweep leaves and other debris away from the surface.

3) Routine cleaning using hot water (not boiling) and soap to remove stains or mud.

4) Removal of singular weeds or plants by hand.

5) Re-coat the surface routinely to cover the mulch and prevent colour markings.
